IOWA CITY — On Saturday, January 22nd, members of the Johnson County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee voted to hold the February 7th midterm precinct caucuses remotely via Zoom. The virtual caucus will be held on Monday, February 7th, via Zoom. Participants can join the virtual caucus room starting at 6:00pm. At 7:00 pm, the caucus will be called to order, and no further entry will be permitted.
Iowans who are both registered to vote at their current address and registered as Democrats are eligible to participate in the virtual caucus. Iowans who will be 18 years old by November 8, 2022, may register and participate. More information about registering or updating voter registration is available at jcdems.org/2022caucus.
“The pandemic is not over,” said Ed Cranston, chair of the Johnson County Democrats. “Omicron continues to spread within Johnson County, and we do not want our caucuses to be a vector for more infections. We believe that our caucuses should be open to all Democrats, including those in high-risk populations. We can achieve that goal this year by moving our caucuses online.”
Members of the media seeking comments or interviews should contact Ed Cranston at 319-337-8683. To arrange for press access to the virtual caucus, contact Tony Andrys at jcdemspr@gmail.com.
IOWA CITY — Johnson County Democratic Party Chair Ed Cranston has released the following statement regarding the results of tonight’s special election:
“Tonight, the voters in Johnson County spoke clearly: Jon Green will be the next supervisor of Johnson County. Jon will be a fantastic supervisor. He will bring the skills and understanding that he demonstrated during his time as mayor of Lone Tree, and he’ll fight for our county’s progressive values while in office. My gratitude goes out to all of the voters, activists, and grassroots allies that made tonight’s victory possible.”
IOWA CITY — The Johnson County Democratic Party is proud to release the following endorsements of Jon Green’s campaign for county supervisor.
Green’s campaign has been endorsed by county supervisors Pat Heiden, Lisa Green-Douglass, and Rod Sullivan. He’s also received the endorsements of Johnson County’s entire Senate delegation, which includes Senate Minority Leader Zach Wahls, Sen. Joe Bolkcom, and Sen. Kevin Kinney. Joining them are Johnson County State Representatives Christina Bohannan, Mary Mascher, and Amy Nielsen.
“I urge everyone to vote for Jon Green for Johnson County Supervisor in the June 8 special election,” wrote Rep. Bohannan. “Jon will be a strong voice for working people, the rural areas of our community, and for our most vulnerable populations.”
Other current and former elected officials endorsing Green include Coralville City Councilmember Meghann Foster, Iowa City Councilmember Janice Weiner, Mayor of Swisher Chris Taylor, former ICCSD Board Member Brian Kirschling, and former Mayor of Iowa City Jim Throgmorton.
Nearly a third of these endorsements come from party leadership: Jon has been endorsed by Ed Cranston, chair of the Johnson County Democrats, eight additional county party officers, and by Iowa DNC Representative Jodi Clemens.
“I know that Jon will fight for economic, racial, social, and environmental justice as a county supervisor,” writes Clemens. “He understands small-town living and can communicate with empathy with those who hold different views. Now more than ever, we need movement leaders who will get out into every community and help facilitate the conversations we need to heal and move forward together. Jon will be that leader; he will always put people first. ”
IOWA CITY — Delegates to a special nominating convention of the Johnson County Democratic Party have selected Jon Green of Lone Tree as the party’s nominee for county supervisor. Green will go on to face the Republican candidate, Phil Hemingway, in a special election on Tuesday, June 8th, 2021.
According to the convention rules, a candidate had to receive a majority vote (50% + 1) of the delegates present and voting to win. Because no candidate received a majority vote on the first ballot, voting extended to three ballots. Green became the nominee in the third round.
Four candidates in total were nominated at the convention: Scott Finlayson of Iowa City, Meghann Foster of Coralville, Jon Green of Lone Tree, and Susan Vileta of Swisher.
