IOWA CITY — On Saturday, January 22nd, members of the Johnson County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee voted to hold the February 7th midterm precinct caucuses remotely via Zoom. The decision to move to a virtual process was made in response to the rise in cases of the Omicron variant in Johnson County.

Residents interested in participating in the caucus must pre-register for the event online at jcdems.org/2022caucus

The virtual caucus will be held on Monday, February 7th, via Zoom. Participants can join the virtual caucus room starting at 6:00pm. At 7:00 pm, the caucus will be called to order, and no further entry will be permitted.

Iowans who are both registered to vote at their current address and registered as Democrats are eligible to participate in the virtual caucus. Iowans who will be 18 years old by November 8, 2022, may register and participate. More information about registering or updating voter registration is available at jcdems.org/2022caucus

“The pandemic is not over,” said Ed Cranston, chair of the Johnson County Democrats. “Omicron continues to spread within Johnson County, and we do not want our caucuses to be a vector for more infections. We believe that our caucuses should be open to all Democrats, including those in high-risk populations. We can achieve that goal this year by moving our caucuses online.”
