Notice of Nominating Convention on May 11th 2021

All delegates and alternates who are planning to participate in the nominating convention should download and review a copy of the convention booklet by clicking here

On April 23rd, the county called for a special election to be held on June 8th to fill a vacancy on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

When a vacancy occurs in a partisan county office (such as the office of county supervisor), the most recent county-level convention must be reconvened in order to choose the Democratic nominee for the position. Because our last county convention was held in April 2020, this is the convention that will be reconvened.

All delegates and alternates to the Johnson County Democratic Convention that was held remotely last April are hereby notified of the upcoming nominating convention:

Nominating Convention
(for the purpose of nominating the
Democratic candidate for County Supervisor)
Johnson County Fairgrounds, Building C
3109 Old Hwy 218 S, Iowa City, IA 52246
commencing at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 11th, 2021.
Official Registration will begin at 5:30 P.M. and will close at 6:15 P.M.

The voting members of the nominating convention shall be those who were elected as delegates to the Johnson County convention during the 2020 precinct caucuses (i.e., the presidential caucuses that were held on February 3rd, 2020). Alternates to the nominating convention are those who were elected as alternates during the 2020 precinct caucuses.

Alternates will be seated in the manner outlined in the nominating convention booklet (Article III – Registration) in order to fill vacancies in the convention delegation.

In accordance with the Constitution of the Iowa Democratic Party, all delegates and alternates to the nominating convention must be registered Democrats in order to be eligible to participate (Article I, Section 2).

Though the convention will be held in person, COVID-19 precautions will be in effect. Seating will be placed six feet apart, and masks will be required throughout the convention. Please see Article XIII in the convention booklet for more details about the COVID-19 guidelines that will be enforced at the event.
