Next year we have important state races to prepare for—Governor, U. S. Senate, Second District U.S. Representative among others. Johnson County will play a critical role in securing Democratic victories. We do this with our passion and our organization. We need to be well prepared and the way to do this is to start now.

Our BBQ event this year will inform us of the issues and candidates for 2010, and will also provide critical financial support for the office, the phones, the postage and all of those “nuts and bolts” that are essential to our success.

Across Iowa Democrats are asking: “Who will be the Democratic Candidate to oppose Senator Grassley in 2010?” Local Democrats have a first chance to answer this for themselves at the BBQ. Tom Fiegen and Bob Krause are the two announced candidates actively campaigning and they will both address local Democrats.

Congressman Dave Loebsack is a member of two key committees: House Education and Labor Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. He will be on hand to report on the latest news from Washington—including progress on health care reform, education, flood relief and the war in Afghanistan.

State Representative Curt Hanson our newest elected State official in Iowa will also attend. Curt was elected as Representative in nearby House District 90 in the September 1 special election. His hard fought victory in a highly competitive race is seen by many in the state as preview of what will be seen statewide in 2010.

Francis Thicke is candidate for Iowa Secretary of Agriculture. A successful dairy farmer from the Fairfield area he understands not only the business of farming but also the role of farming in producing quality local food and will address us on these issues.

The Annual Fall BBQ is the traditional major fundraising activity for the Johnson County Democrats. It is the best opportunity for local Democrats to meet with each other and local elected representatives. All funds raised provide local support for election of Iowa Democrats
