3. 3.       Chair Report – Thanks to everyone who came out for the parades.  It has been a busy month and the next few months will be busy as well with more parades, the JC Fair and the BBQ.
4. 4.       Treasurer Report – Karen motioned and Diana seconded.  Approved
5. 5.       Executive Committee Reports – Dennis Roseman from the Platform Committee handed out a document to be handed out at the JC Fair on our Platform views of Agriculture and Environment.
6. 6.       Recognition of Elected Representatives:  Joe Bolkcom, Janet Lyness, Lonnie Pulkrabek, Mary Mascher, Patrick Hughes, Dave Jacoby and Kathryn Valde

   1. a.       ICE – Meets periodically to brainstorm next steps.         

                                                              i.      Data Governance is working on creating a volunteer database for Johnson County to be housed in VoteBuilder

                                                            ii.      Website/Media group is working with Greg Johnson trying to make jcdems.org more user friendly.  Please send email to info@jcdems.org if you notice something that needs correcting.  Currently under constructions and not all things updated.

1. b.      Parades – great attendance so far – thank you

                                                              i.      Stickers are $.09 – hand them out but please don’t hand out multiples

1. c.       JC Fair

                                                              i.      Set up on July 21^st.  Need to cover 9 AM – 9 PM.  2 hour shifts.  If interested in a shift please send an email to info@jcdems.org.

                                                            ii.      As last year we will have stand-up Obama and Popcorn with JCDems stickers

                                                              i.      Sunday October 13 from 3-7 PM at the JC Fairgrounds

1. e.      Cedar/Johnson County Pot luck will be at 326 N Fourth St, West Branch, IA at 5 PM on August 3^rd.  Please plan on joining.  More info will be coming.
2. f.        Harkin Grant – up to $2K per county.  Some of our weaknesses are Rural, Minorities and Youth.

5. Executive Committee Reports:

Dennis Roseman spoke about the importance of the caucuses as that is where the Platform begins to take shape.

6. Recognition of Elected Officials: Rod Sullivan, Patrick Hughes

7. Guest Speakers:

a. Richard Gilmore, Washington County Democrats Chair and candidate for State

Senate Seat 39 said that there are three parts to his platform: freedom, security and opportunity for all.

b. Kingsley Botchway II, candidate for IC City Council said he would like to work on ways to allow and encourage all IC residents to be able to enjoy and participate in those cultural activities that downtown IC is known for. He also wants to work on diversity issues and ways to erase racial inequalities in incarceration.

c. Catherine Champion, candidate for IC City Council spoke about increasing

opportunities for entrepreneurism to promote a strong business base for Iowa

City, and encouraging business growth on the east side.

d. Rockne Cole, candidate for IC City Council talked about his passion for

sustainability for our community through ensuring building of Gold LEED

Certified buildings; encouraging greater use of public transit, walking, cycling and encouraging green business growth through the use of TIF.

e. Royceann Porter, candidate for IC City Council, spoke about her years of

involvement with the community giving her an acute understanding of the

needs of Iowa City and helped establish her goals of providing safe,

affordable housing for all, working to establish living wage jobs, and

embracing the emerging diversity of Iowa City by holding open meetings

with the community to keep the community involved and apprised of

decisions made by the City Council.

Mike explained that invitations to speak at tonight’s meeting were sent to all

announced candidates from council races of towns in Johnson County, but the Iowa City candidates were the only ones who accepted.

John Deeth announced that early voting for the Nov. 5 City Council election is ongoing now at the auditor’s office, and satellite voting begins Oct 14, check the

auditor’s website for times and locations.

8. Old Business:

a.  Free lunch *pass the box* raised $95.25 tonight.  Robin Roseman reported

that she had enough volunteers for tomorrow’s (10/4) free lunch and also

reported that Pauline Taylor who is very knowledgeable about the

affordable care act, will also be at the free lunch to explain how to find out

about health insurance to anyone who may be interested.

b.  Election of Central Committee representatives:

Roger Mills reported that he moved and is resigning from his precinct IC 24.  He now lives in North Liberty and was approved by acclamation as a

representative of NL 04.

c.  Election of 2nd District Committee representatives:  none

9. New Business:

a. ICE: Data and Communication Committee Report

The IDP will be here to train us in Vote Builder and Party Builder on Wed.

October 23, at 7pm. Gerene will send out more info before the date.

b. U of I Homecoming Parade is Friday (tomorrow) Oct. 4. We are #55 and are

lining up on Johnson street between Jefferson and Iowa starting at 3 pm.  Wear Dem gear.  We will be handing out stickers and business cards (no candy).  We will have two vehicles – a sign trailer, and a truck pulling a hay rack for those needing to ride the route.

c.  Next meeting of the BBQ committee will be Tuesday, Oct. 9th at the Mill at

5:30.  The Fall BBQ is next Sunday, Oct. 13, 3pm – 7pm in Building C at the

Johnson County Fairgrounds. Peter has sent out call lists to several central

committee members to be sure all former sponsors have been contacted to

invite them to sponsor again this year. Robin Roseman is still needing more

desserts, and has a signup sheet, but if you haven’t signed up and still want to

make a dessert, bring it to the BBQ on Sunday.  Gerene has compiled a

volunteer list for working the BBQ and will send out the completed list before

Sunday to those who volunteered.  Serving will begin at 4pm.  Tickets are $15

per person or $30 per family and can be purchased at the door or online using

the ActBlue button on our website, jcdems.org. There are no paper tickets.

The names of those buying online will be on the list at the door.  Lily Tate will

be providing an activity area for children during the BBQ. Zach Wahls is the

only confirmed speaker at this time. Expected guests are US Senate Candidate, Congressman Bruce Braley and Congressman Dave Loebsack.  Their attendance depends on whether or not they are needed in DC. Other guests are

Gubernatorial Candidates: Jack Hatch, Robert Krause, and Tyler Olson; plus

Iowa Secretary of State candidate, Brad Anderson.  Mike also said that

unfortunately we have been unable to secure live music.

d. The North Liberty outreach ice cream social with Congressman Loebsack and

Johnson County electeds on September 16, was a fun time and netted 23 new

contacts in North Liberty.

e. The Cedar County Dems Fundraiser Dinner & Pie Auction is Saturday, Oct. 5,

5:30pm, at West Branch City Hall, $10.

f.   Washington County Fundraiser is Sunday, Oct.6, 12 noon, at the Washington

County Fairgrounds. Food catered by Cafe’ Dodici. $10.

g. John Deeth has been working on the Jan 21 caucuses that the Republicans

have now agreed to have theirs on the same day.  John is looking at having 9

cluster sites for the 57 precincts, and worked out the math giving Johnson Co.

a possible 233 delegates for the 2014 caucuses.  Dennis moved that we adopt

the 233 delegate number.  It was seconded and passed unanimously. John

passed around a sheet to volunteer for various duties during the caucuses.

10.  Speakers and/or announcements:

a. Mike again floated the idea of having monthly luncheons or happy hours to

have some fun and foster a greater sense of community.  Will discuss again

after the BBQ.

b. Nancy Porter invited all to a chili feed after the Homecoming Parade tomorrow

at her home – address 2519 Potomac Dr., Iowa City.  She also invited all to a

remembrance of the 12th anniversary of the war in Afghanistan to be held

this Sunday, Oct. 6, 1pm on the Pentacrest.

1. Exec. Committee Reports (if any) – (The affordable Care Act would be a good thing to have forums on.  Perhaps this is something we can do after the BBQ)
   1. Diana Coberly spoke about getting the people who spoke on the Affordable Care Act at the 2^nd District to Iowa City for a forum.
   2. Pauline Taylor from UIHC also spoke on Obamacare.

i.      There is a lot of misinformation about the Affordable Care Act.  Visit Healthcare.org for more information

1. Dennis Roseman spoke on the planks from our County Platform.  We are on record of supporting all International Law.
2. John Deeth spoke on the Caucuses in January.  It is complicated but historically both parties work together with their Caucuses so they are on the same day.  The Republicans did not talk with the Democrats this time and chose January 25^th which is the Jewish Sabbath.  We have had Caucuses on Saturdays before and they were always less attended.  The Democrats are trying to get the Republicans to change their date.  We also need to start looking at places and clusters.

i.      Mike said that our 1^st in the Nation status is already in trouble.  We need to be on the same day

   1. 85% think Corporations have too much power and influence
   2. Move to Amend is educating people on how the Supreme Court has been used to transfer power from the people to Corporations.
   3. Working to overturn Citizen’s United
   4. Organizing people – a diverse group and a campaign that crosses all races and financial diversity
   5. Iowa needs to take a hard stance on Citizens United
   6. The next Iowa City meeting will be September 24^th at 6 PM.  1^st Ave HyVee

  • Greg Johnson has worked hard on the site.  Tom moved that we pay him $450 for the work he has done.  Seconded.  Approved.
  • BBQ Committee met 8/12 & 9/4. Many wheels in motion. Sponsor mailing out soon.
    • The committee is working on music for the BBQ, tickets are now available at JCDems.org – either using ActBlue or a form to send in.  Tickets will not be handed out.  A list of people who have paid will be kept at the door.  No one will be turned away – if you can’t afford a ticket we do have sponsors.  We do not have a speaker yet but Mike is working with the party.  Please consider donating something for the Silent Auction to help us raise money.  We have received two “baskets” so far.
    •  Johnson County – Cedar County Dems Picnic Aug 3 a big success! Need to do the same with Washington County Dems and Keokuk County Dems (Senate District 39). Washington County Fundraiser is Sun. Oct. 6, 12 noon at Washington Country Fairgrounds. Food catered by Café Dodici.
    • 2^nd District HOF Lori Bears, Bill & Pat Sueppel, Kim Painter are the JC Dems inductees. Hotel Ottumwa, 107 E 2nd St, Ottumwa, IA (641-682-8051) Saturday, September 21, 2013 Social hour (cash bar) will begin at 4:00 PM with dinner and awards to follow. 1st Annual Silent Auction & Raffle

 

The JCDems have decided to hold a Silent Auction and Raffle at this year’s JCDems BBQ (October 13, 2013 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds Bldg C from 3-7). We are looking for donations for either a silent auction or raffle.

 

Silent Auction – For a silent auction your item(s)/basket will be on a table with a bidding sheet in front of it. The bidding sheet will include the name of the item, donator’s name, minimum bid and actual value of the item. Bidders will fill in an amount higher than the minimum or latest bid along with their name. At the end of the time limit the bidder with the highest bid will win the basket.

Raffle – For the raffle we will sell ticket at 1 for $1 or 6 for $5. Tickets will be placed in a box and the winning bid will be drawn. Raffle items are usually a larger dollar amount than the auction.

 

50/50 – similar to Raffle except the winning prize will be ½ of the money used to buy tickets. The other half will go to the JCDems.

 

GREAT FOR BUSINESSES – Because the bidding sheet will have the donator’s name it will be a great way for businesses to do some advertising. JCDems will see that you are donating to help the JCDems. When the raffle is being drawn the person/business donating the item will also be announced (as well as noted on the item for people to see as they browse).

 

GREAT FOR ARTISTS – Get your work out there for people to see. Do you paint? Donate a painting. Do you quilt? Donate a quilt. Do you sew? Sew something to donate. Woodworker? Donate a bird house, book shelf anything you want to make! Because we are Democrats any donations of political memorabilia will be appreciated.

 

NO ITEM TOO SMALL – if you can’t donate a lot you can always donate smaller items that we can combine into a larger basket (no items will be combined/broken up unless agreed to by donator).

 

Anyone can donate! – Items do not have to be new. If you have DVDs that you no longer watch you can put them in a basket along with microwave popcorn, wine, or whatever to make a date night basket. Put the items for an Italian/Mexican/Greek/Scandinavian dinner in a basket.
