( Note: this meeting was a rescheduling of a meeting which was to have been on Oct 1. So there was no CC meeting that took place in the month of October.)

Minutes of the Johnson County Central Committee Meeting, September 24, 2009

Meeting called to order at 7:08 PM.

Secretary’s report was tabled.
Treasurer’s report presented and approved.

John Deeth spoke in memory of Larry Meyers.

Chair’s report. Working on mailing the BBQ newsletter.

Speakers:
Pete D’Alessandro and Jessie Harris, guests from the Culver Campaign.
Brief update on putting together the Culver/Judge reelection campaign. Expecting a tough general election campaign and are looking to start building the statewide organization.

Speaker: Doug Jones
“Early requirements for mechanical voting systems”. Transition from primitive voting to mechanical voting systems. Reformers began pushing for universal suffrage and secret ballots in the 19th century. Repeating this history of moving from paper ballots to mechanical systems that resulted in a monopoly as we move to electronic voting systems.

Fundraising Committee Report: Volunteer signup sheet for BBQ passed. Expenses predicted to be less than $1200. Meals and speakers arranged. Dessert signup sheet passed. Tickets passed out to members( yellow tickets for individuals $15 and orchid tickets for families $30). E-mail Dennis Roseman to turn in ticket sale money. Contact Ed Flaherty to obtain more tickets.

UI Homecoming Parade October 9th. We are marching with the UDEMS, and also Tom Fiegan for Senate. Robin Roseman is planning on making health care reform signs and will plan a sign-making party.
Excetutive Committee will be meeting Thursday prior to the CC Meeting.

No CC nominations.

New Business:

Homecoming Parade already covered.

No political entries will be allowed in the City High Homecoming Parade.

Johnson County Convention scheduled March 13. Discussion about hosting the Second District Convention in Iowa City. Could we host in 2010 and 2012? Is it a money loser? Effect of Congressional redistricting for 2012? Ruth Spinks volunteered to handle the food.

Need to plan follow-up phone calls to sponsors. Jean Falk suggests calling on Oct. 5th during the BBQ meeting. Let her know if you can help.

Motion to make application to host Second District Convention in Johnson County. Seconded. Passed.

Speakers:

Lori Bears spoke on Iowa City Council curfew vote.

John Deeth: will supply donor phone list of Democratic donors.

John Deeth spoke on replacing Larry Meyers. Public meeting 9/25 at 2pm on whether there will be an appointment or special election. Vacancy must be filled or call for special election by Nov 1st (40 days). Public has 14 days to call for special election if in disagreement with appointment. Democrats would need to reconvene the County Convention to nominate a candidate for a special election. Auditor’s website will be updated.

Affirmative Action Chair Corey Stoglin has returned from Afghanistan and is back in Iowa City.
