What Is Central Committee?
Members of the Johnson County Democratic Party’s Central Committee fill many important roles in the Democratic Party structure. Some of the duties include developing the mission, constitution, and bylaws of the Party. Members also elect the County Chair, lead, and work on various committees to serve our community and support Democratic Party members within the county. We represent voters in our precincts and help recruit others to join the Democrats of Johnson County, Iowa! And, of course, committee members play many important roles in County, State, and National elections, including the world-famous Iowa Caucuses.
Who are the members of the Central Committee?
Per our constitution (Article III, Sec. 1), the voting membership of the central committee is comprised of two elected representatives from each of the 64 electoral precincts within Johnson County.
More information about the composition and membership of the central committee is available on our membership page.

Central Committee meets on the first Thursday of each month. Meetings are hybrid zoom/in-person until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They remain open to the public either in-person or via zoom. The in-person location is the Carpenter’s Union Hall – 1008 William St, Iowa City. Each meeting begins promptly at 6:30pm and is usually wrapped up by 8:00pm.
NOTE: To join one of our virtual meetings, email us at democratsjohnsoncounty@gmail.com and let us know which one of our meetings you’d like to attend — we’ll send you the Zoom link.
Does the Central Committee Need My Help?
Absolutely! We need members for each precinct in Johnson County: two per precinct. If you are interested in serving, please first visit our membership page to learn more about our structure and where we currently have vacancies. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us at democratsjohnsoncounty@gmail.com. People are elected to open seats at the end of each Central Committee monthly meeting. If your precinct already has two elected members, don’t fret — you can join the committee as an alternate member for your precinct.
We also need many volunteers to march in parades, coordinate fundraisers, work once a month at the Iowa City Free Lunch program, and assist with many other events countywide. Being involved at the local level is one of the most effective ways to use your voice and have it heard.
