Proposal: Johnson County Democratic Party Voter Protection Committee
The Voter Protection Committee reports to the First Vice Chair of the Johnson County Democratic Party, as part of the GOTV organizing effort.
Voter protection includes poll watching on election day and at satellite voting locations, as well as observers for the absentee ballot count, the meetings of the elections boards, and the canvass of the Board of Supervisors. Members of the committee may serve on recount boards, and/or observe recounts.
This committee trains and organizes people to fill all the necessary positions at polling locations and at vote counting locations. For voter protection purposes, the committee would interact with other voter protection teams at the IDP and in other Democratic entities in the state.
Mission Statement
Recent challenges to the democratic process and democracy itself have made voter protection more necessary than ever. Recent changes to the Iowa voting laws encourage interference from poll watchers and observers, which in other states has led to voter intimidation. Taken together with national events at the US Capitol, the need for voter protection will be a challenge for the foreseeable future. Our goal is to effectively counter those threats in Johnson County with a stable, well-trained cohort
Statement of Purpose
We gather information on all events and laws that impact voter protection. We train our local party volunteers to be well-informed on voter laws and ready to respond to threats.
At election time we recruit, vet, train and organize volunteers to carry out our mission. We report to the Vice Chair and communicate our activities to the Central Committee meetings. Per Iowa elections law, the actual assignments are made by the County Chair by authority from the Executive Committee.
Organization
The First Vice Chair shall appoint a three-member ad hoc organizing committee, which operates under the supervision of the Vice Chair.
