Upcoming Events & Opportunities to Volunteer

The Johnson County Democratic Party participates in many events throughout the year. Most of the events listed below are hosted by other organizations, but we’ll be at least attending each. Note that there are many opportunities to volunteer and get involved, especially in terms of registering voters. If you have questions about one of these events, please email Leah Jesse.

As part of our community outreach, the JC Dems sponsor the free lunch program once a month in even numbered months. If you’d like more information about contributing time or money to the program, please inquire with robin.roseman@gmail.com. The next free lunch will take place August 4; please scroll down for more info.

If you want to offer your services generally for the future, please feel free to fill out our volunteer form.

Saturday, November 11 – Armistice Day Observance

Veterans For Peace Chapter #161 is sponsoring an Armistice Day Observance to be held on Saturday, November 11 at the Clinton St/Iowa Ave. entrance to Old Capitol, Iowa City. Bells will be rung at 11:00 am, as they were rung around the world at the end of World War I ninety-nine years ago in 1918,  and on each November 11 for decades thereafter. Armistice Day is a day to promote PEACE and to remember the victims of war, both veterans and civilians. The event will feature Veterans for Peace from throughout the state of Iowa. The event is free, and the public is welcome. This is the only Armistice Day Observance in the state of Iowa. There will be a free lunch and open mic at the social hall of the nearby Congregational church immediately after the Observance. Monday, February 5, 2018 – Caucus with the JC Dems
Volunteer Sign-Up

The Johnson County Democrats need volunteers on caucus night—February 5, 2018! Don’t worry, this is going to be MUCH smaller than 2016! The training schedule will be announced later. For now, here’s a list of the responsibilities associated with each position.

Caucus Chair: The person in charge. With this position, experience is definitely a plus. You need to be able to set up the room, conduct a fair and impartial meeting, conduct votes, manage volunteers, and explain the process to newcomers. Note that while we have multiple slots for sign up, there is only one chair for each caucus location, and that chair is selected by the county party chair. Please sign up if you are interested, even if someone else is listed, but understand that signing up doesn’t guarantee you the position. Note also that the title is officially “temporary” chair, and theoretically you can get voted out.

Secretary: The number two person in charge. Keeps records including the paperwork on committee members, delegates and alternates, and platform resolutions. There are multiple slots for signup, but this person is traditionally selected by the caucus chair, so again, please sign up to express your interest, but understand that the position is not guaranteed.

Volunteers: We need people to sign in attendees, register voters who aren’t on the lists, give directions, and answer questions.
